METEORS
If you Look up at the sky on a clear night, you may be Lucky enough to see a shooting star, a bright streak of Light across the sky. The scientific name for a shooting star is a meteor, and meteors have nothing to do with stars! Little chunks of rock in space are called meteoroids. Occasionally they get close enough to Earth to enter our atmosphere. When they travel through the atmosphere, it creates friction, which makes the meteoroid so hot that it glows.
Many meteors burn up completely in the atmosphere. However, some make it through and land on Earth. When this happens, they are called meteorites. Over the centuries, people have found meteorites all over Earth. Antarctica is a particularly good place to find them. Ice provides a softer landing than rock, and meteorite rocks are easier to spot against a snowy background. Meteorites are a great way for scientists to study what other objects in space are like without ever leaving Earth. In many cases they have been able to tell where a meteorite has come from, based on what it is made of.
